resisting healing and choosing a new path

Resisting Healing: Why We Hold On

Resisting healing is more common than many of us realize. We want to feel free, happy, and at peace, but when the moment comes to let go of old pain or limiting beliefs, we often hold on tighter. Understanding why we resist healing is the first step to moving beyond it and finally releasing what holds us back.

The Comfort of Resisting Healing

Even if what we are carrying hurts us, it’s familiar. Our mind and body get used to living with old patterns, emotional wounds, or negative self-talk. Releasing them can feel like stepping into unknown territory. The unknown is scary, even when it promises something better.

Sometimes, the pain becomes part of our identity. Without it, we may wonder: Who am I if I let this go?

Fear of Change and Resisting Healing

Healing isn’t just about feeling better—it’s about change. And change can unsettle us. What if healing means leaving behind relationships that no longer align with us? What if it shifts how others see us, or even how we see ourselves?

The fear of what life looks like after healing can create resistance. We unconsciously decide it feels safer to stay where we are.

Subconscious Beliefs That Hold Us Back

Deep within, we may hold hidden beliefs that block us from moving forward. Beliefs such as:

  • I don’t deserve happiness.

  • If I heal, I’ll lose the attention or care I receive from others.

  • Life is supposed to be hard.

These beliefs often run quietly in the background, creating resistance each time we try to let go.

My Own Story of Resisting Healing

For a long time, I didn’t even realize that what was keeping me stuck wasn’t the pain itself—it was my resistance to healing.

I remember a period when I started questioning everything. I thought: “If healing works, why do I still feel this way? Why am I not seeing the results I want?” I was showing up, but deep inside, I was holding back.

The truth was, I was resisting. Part of me believed that letting go of my pain would mean it wasn’t real or important. Another part of me was scared of who I’d become without the weight I’d been carrying for so long.

The turning point came when I realized that my resistance was not proof that healing wasn’t working—it was the very thing keeping me from moving forward. Once I surrendered, little by little, the heaviness began to lift.

Awareness Breaks the Cycle of Resistance

The first step in overcoming resistance is noticing it. When you feel yourself clinging to old stories or struggling to release an emotional weight, pause. Ask yourself:

  • What am I afraid of if I let this go?

  • What part of me feels safer holding on?

Simply bringing resistance into awareness begins to loosen its grip.

Moving Beyond Resisting Healing

When we finally surrender—when we choose to release what holds us back—we step into a new version of ourselves. A lighter, freer, truer self. And while resistance may show up again, each time we meet it with awareness and courage, it loses power over us.

Healing isn’t about forcing yourself to let go. It’s about opening the door when you’re ready and trusting that what waits on the other side is better than what you’ve been holding onto.

Remember: Resistance isn’t failure—it’s part of the journey. The fact that you’re aware of it means healing has already begun.
